At most meetings we have either professional or amateur growers giving talks, slide shows and advice on orchid culture. A members’ show table is also well supported each month, with marks given for the way a plant has been grown and flowered. We are fortunate to have 2 qualified judges in our society whose expertise and advice is always welcome. We also have one trainee judge. Read rules of judging.
Society members range from the experienced growers to novices with only one or two plants on the windowsill.
The society holds two shows a year. One on Easter Saturday, when other societies, trade exhibitors and professional growers gather together to make a fine show of many rare and exotic flowers. The second, our Christmas show, is only for members, but it is amazing how many vibrant, colourful orchids flower at this time of year. The society also exhibits at other orchid shows in the Midlands region.
An annual trip by coach is organised by the society to visit places of interest relating to orchids. In 2016 we visited Burnham’s Nursery in Newton Abbot where we were able to see their wonderful orchid collection and return with many choice purchases. In 2017 we visited Chester Zoo who hold the National Collection of Pleurothallids and in 2018 we were going to RHS Wisley which included a behind the scenes tour of the orchid collection. In 2019 we went to Burnhm nurseries in Devon for another behind the scenes tour.
A membership card is provided on joining, with the programme for the year. We also have our own society badge. Current membership is £12 per year single £16 joint.Visitors are always welcome.
